Over 8,500 My First Skool (MFS) children and their family members joined forces with co-operators, their families and members of the public to form the largest mass reading contingent in Singapore at a single event today. This record setting activity for the Singapore Book of Records, which took place at “Co-opaliciouz”, held at the Marina Barrage, was attended by President Tony Tan.
The chorus mass reading is based on ‘A Very Big Storm’, the first of four children storybooks on co-operative values, published by the Singapore National Co-operative Federation (SNCF) and written by international award winning author, Emily Lim. The mass reading was one of the many activities planned for “Co-opaliciouz”, an initiative by SNCF to bring together co-operative members, their families and members of the public to celebrate the social-economic contributions of co-operative movements to build a better world.
In preparation for this major event, MFS children were encouraged in different ways to familiarise themselves with “A Very Big Storm”. Story-telling, play-acting and creating crafts, were just some of the activities conducted for and with the children to stimulate their interest in the story. And, in order for children to learn the true spirit of co-operation, teachers of MFS put the children to work in groups where they had to tap on one another’s strengths to produce different works with ideas originating from “A Very Big Storm”.
One such creation was hats based on the four animal characters in the storybook – a squirrel, a bear, a monkey and a sparrow. These hats were proudly worn by the MFS children during the chorus mass reading session – quite a sight to see with so many cute ‘animal creatures’ coming together in a singular space, mass reading.
“Seeing our children learn the spirit of co-operation was the biggest take-away we had for taking part in this event,” said Mrs Adeline Tan, General Manager of MFS. “We are proud to say that we not only managed to truly build an interest in reading among our children, we got them working together and understanding why it is important to help one another in order to accomplish greater things together”.
