Blending Heritage with Innovation: Reimagining Spaces for Inspired Learning

Former school sites across Singapore, left vacant due to school mergers, are being revitalised by the Singapore Land Authority (SLA) and Ministry of Education (MOE) to support community, education, healthcare, and housing needs. Among these efforts, the former Loyang Primary School exemplifies thoughtful repurposing, now serving as a hub for education and innovation.
NTUC First Campus’s My First Skool has transformed one part of the site into a state-of-the-art preschool centre, which began operations in May 2023. The centre can accommodate up to 1,100 children and 175 staff. Inspired by Loyang’s rich history, the design incorporates natural elements, including 11 preserved yellow flame trees. “It was an intentional effort to keep them. We didn’t want to cut them down, because we wanted to keep the heritage of the place and have nature be front and obvious to our children.” shared Thian Ai Ling, General Manager of My First Skool.
With 60 classes, three outdoor play areas, and dedicated spaces for structured and unstructured outdoor learning, the centre offers a safe and stimulating environment. “It’s very conducive to do things in this space because this space is ours,” noted Tang Hui Min, the centre’s principal. The expansive campus allows for innovative play and learning opportunities, ensuring children can enjoy outdoor activities within a secure setting.
Recognised for its exceptional design, the centre was the only Singapore finalist in the completed schools category at the 2024 World Architecture Awards.
This transformation of a former school site exemplifies My First Skool’s commitment to sustainability and community connection, seamlessly blending heritage with innovation. It also demonstrates how, by putting children at the heart of design, we can reimagine spaces that inspire both growth and a lifelong love for learning.
Another portion of the former Loyang Primary School has been tenanted to Vidacity, a sustainable innovation hub that supports eco-startups. This redevelopment is part of SLA’s broader initiative to optimise vacant state properties.
