Storytelling aid ‘Time travel to Singapore’ by teachers Yu Jiao and Qi Feng Xian from My First Skool at Blk 209 Ang Mo Kio bagged the third prize at the 2024 Preschool Chinese Language Storytelling Aids Competition on July 13.

The teaching aid showcases Singapore’s past, present, and future through three distinct areas: the Kampong community, the Housing & Development Board (HDB) precinct, and outer space. By using a variety of interactive mechanisms, young children can engage in small games like satay stick assembling and tile-laying to experience and learn about local ethnic groups and cultures through rich sensory experiences. The teachers also developed a picture book with the same title.

To create the storytelling aid, senior Chinese teacher Qi Feng Xian, who has 24 years of teaching experience, shared that the team visited Singapore’s Pioneer Generation and Merdeka Generation, and also explored various local museums and the HDB to enhance their knowledge.

“We hope to create a teaching aid with local characteristics that enables children to learn through fun and interactive activities, while gaining a better understanding of local history and culture,” she said.

Organised by the Committee to Promote Chinese Language Learning, the awards recognise teachers’ creativity and dedication in making the learning of Chinese Language fun and effective for young children.
